1. **Definition of Excretion:**

   - Excretion is the process by which metabolic waste products and excess substances are removed from the body to maintain internal homeostasis.


2. **Major Excretory Organs:**

   - **Kidneys:** Primary organs involved in the excretion of metabolic waste, excess salts, and water. They also play a crucial role in maintaining blood pressure and electrolyte balance.

   - **Skin:** Excretes sweat, containing water, salts, and small amounts of urea, aiding in temperature regulation.

   - **Lungs:** Eliminate carbon dioxide, a byproduct of cellular respiration, during the process of breathing.


3. **Excretory Products:**

   - **Urea:** Formed in the liver as a result of protein metabolism, it is the main nitrogenous waste excreted in urine by mammals.

   - **Ammonia:** Some aquatic organisms excrete ammonia directly, a highly toxic but water-soluble compound.

   - **Uric Acid:** Birds, reptiles, and insects excrete uric acid, a relatively insoluble compound, reducing water loss.


4. **Human Excretory System:**

   - **Kidney Structure:** Renal cortex and renal medulla with functional units called nephrons responsible for filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.

   - **Filtration:** Blood is filtered in the glomerulus, and the filtrate enters the renal tubules.

   - **Reabsorption:** Valuable substances like glucose and ions are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.

   - **Secretion:** Additional substances, including drugs and excess ions, are actively secreted into the filtrate.

   - **Concentration:** The nephron concentrates urine by reabsorbing water, ensuring water conservation when needed.

   - **Dilution:** When excess water is present, urine is diluted by decreased reabsorption.


6. **Urinary System Components:**

   - **Ureters:** Tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

   - **Bladder:** Temporary storage organ for urine.

   - **Urethra:** Tube through which urine is expelled from the body.

   - **Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH):** Released by the pituitary gland, it regulates water reabsorption in the kidneys, controlling urine concentration.

   - **Aldosterone:** Hormone from the adrenal glands that regulates sodium and potassium balance, influencing water reabsorption.

   - **Kidney Stones:** Crystalline formations in the kidneys due to the accumulation of minerals.

   - **Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):** Infections affecting the urinary system, often caused by bacteria.

   - **Renal Failure:** Impaired kidney function leading to a buildup of waste and fluid imbalances.


9. **Comparison with Plant Excretion:**

   - **Plants:** Excrete oxygen and metabolic byproducts during photosynthesis, and excess salts through specialized structures like salt glands.


10. **Adaptations in Aquatic Organisms:**

    - **Freshwater Fish:** Produce large volumes of dilute urine to eliminate excess water.

    - **Marine Fish:** Conserve water and excrete concentrated salt through specialized cells.
